The rumors tell of a library, the largest library in the world. It is said to contain every tome, volume, and book in the universe, and is run by a strange, tall man named Irminsul, who always conceals his face behind a blue mask. He does not manage the library alone, however; he is assisted by a motley crew of birdlike helpers, though almost all have gone insane from isolation and have various disabilities. He also makes the acquaintance of one mechanical owl, though this too is beginning to break down. Its eyelids have become stuck, and it can no longer blink; the mechanical arm on its back that is used for sorting books has broken, and can only move erratically. Furthermore, a rather unfortunate accident a few years ago caused it to crack its head, damaging some of the machinery inside and causing it to become much more reclusive. Despite all of its flaws, however, the owl remains Irminsul's favorite companion.
